Steve Stancil
State Property Officer
Executive Director, GBA
Steve Stancil is the State Property Officer. He was appointed to that position on February 15, 2008 by Governor Perdue.
Prior to this appointment, Stancil served as the Executive Director of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA). Stancil oversaw the development of GRTA’s successful Developments of Regional Impact review process and the implementation of Xpress, the first truly regional commuter coach service in metropolitan Atlanta. Stancil has also championed the TIME task force, which has brought together the broad array of law enforcement, emergency response, and others that are charged with responding to and clearing the traffic incidents that cause as much as half of the congestion on the region’s highways. Because of the TIME Task Force efforts, the amount of time necessary to clear incidents from traffic lanes has been reduced substantially.
Prior to joining GRTA, Stancil was a real estate Broker at Century 21 Max Stancil Realty Company, which he co-owns with his father. In 2002 Stancil was the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor, an honor he accepted after having served for 13 years in the Georgia State House of Representatives representing the communities of Woodstock, Canton, Holly Springs, Waleska, and Ball Ground. During his time in the State House of Representatives Stancil gained a wealth of experience in numerous policy areas including growth and development, transportation, and budgeting. He authored the first legislation to provide for the transfer of development rights to protect needed greenspace in fast-growing areas and the law creating the Lake Allatoona Preservation Authority. Stancil also co-authored the Constitutional Amendment that encourages infill by improving blighted properties. As a member of the State Planning and Community Affairs Committee, Stancil took part in drafting the Planning Act of 1989, Georgia's first-ever statewide planning legislation. In 1992 he was elected House Republican Leader by his colleagues.
He is a member of the MARTA Board of Directors, the Cherokee Board of Realtors, Georgia Association of Realtors and the Board of Advisors at Reinhardt College. Stancil served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, leaving as a Staff Sergeant in 1977. He received an associate degree from Reinhardt College and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Georgia. Stancil was awarded the "Legislative Service Award" on three different occasions by the Georgia Municipal Association and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia. He and his wife, Cristal, have three sons. Stancil attends Canton First United Methodist Church.
